Report: Nottingham Forest could bring player who left the City Ground in 2019 back this summer

Nottingham Forest could bring a player who left the City Ground in 2019 back to the club this summer.

A lot of new faces have arrived since Steve Cooper guided the Garibaldi back to the Premier League, such as Anthony Elanga and Murillo – although a familiar figure may soon be playing in red once again.

So, who could Nottingham Forest re-sign this summer? Let’s take a look…

Nottingham Forest monitor Ben Brereton Diaz

A story from the Daily Mail now claims that Nottingham Forest are monitoring Ben Brereton Diaz – and could make a move if Taiwo Awoniyi leaves the City Ground.

The Daily Mail are primarily reporting the news that Marco Silva is an option for Evangelos Marinakis if Nuno Espirito Santo leaves this summer, amid interest from other clubs.

However – at the bottom of the article – it is stated that Nottingham Forest are willing to listen to offers for Awoniyi this summer after the Nigeria international’s injury hit 2023/24 campaign, and would pursue Diaz if a buyer is found.

The Chile international – who emerged from Nottingham Forest’s academy in 2017 – finds himself at a crossroads in his career after spending the second half of last season on loan at Sheffield United.

Diaz – who is contracted to Villarreal – is unlikely to join the Blades permanently after relegation to the Championship, and does not seem to have a future in Spain either, so a return to the City Ground could well be on.

The man from Stoke-on-Trent made a total of 57 appearances for Nottingham Forest from 2017 to 2019, scoring nine goals and providing seven assists before joining Blackburn Rovers.

Nuno seems to want a new forward amid interest in Che Adams – who now looks set to join Wolves instead.

Chile international would be a shrewd signing

In our view, this would be a fantastic signing.

Diaz shone for Sheffield United in the second half of last season, impressively scoring six goals in 14 Premier League appearances for a side who only netted 28 goals in total.

Despite spending just six months at Bramall Lane, the 25-year-old was even named as the BBC‘s Player of the Season for Sheffield United.

With that in mind, and the fact Diaz knows the City Ground very well, we believe this would be a smart bit of business if a deal materialises – be sure to keep an eye on the situation.
