Report: Why Steve Parish mentioned Yohan Cabaye after a defeat at Crystal Palace last season

Steve Parish mentioned Yohan Cabaye and Luka Milivojevic after a defeat at Crystal Palace last season when speaking to his inner circle.

The Crystal Palace Chairman is not planning to bring the pair back to Selhurst Park in any capacity – although he is said to have name dropped the duo when chatting to Dougie Freedman and others.

So, why did Steve Parish mention Yohan Cabaye and Luka Milivojevic at Crystal Palace last season? Let’s take a look…

Why Steve Parish spoke about Yohan Cabaye and Luka Milivojevic

The Telegraph have now released a feature on the recruitment work behind the scenes at Selhurst Park – which led to the Eagles having four players in the England squad for UEFA EURO 2024.

Within the piece, some quotes are taken from Parish as well as a few anecdotes, with one section claiming that the 58-year-old highlighted the lack of a playmaker like Cabaye or Milivojevic at Crystal Palace after a defeat last season.

In response, Freedman – Director of Football at Selhurst Park – and his fellow recruitment team urged the man from Forest Hill to sign Adam Wharton to fill this particular void.

Parish told the Telegraph: “Dougie and his team were unanimous, ‘Steve, sign Adam Wharton’. We are very lucky to have a hard working scouting team. They stand by their decisions.”

What a decision that has since proven to be.

Wharton is now the talk of the country after remarkably breaking into Gareth Southgate’s England squad for UEFA EURO 2024 – despite making just 16 Premier League appearances following a £22m move from Blackburn in January.

Crystal Palace fans now have to trust the recruitment team 100%

We ourselves are guilty of being critical of recruitment at Crystal Palace over the years.

Even in January, we disagreed with the pursuit of another central midfielder while David Ozoh was already at Selhurst Park and failing to make the starting XI.

Now – however – Freedman has hit the nail on the head too many times for us to be critical anymore, and we instead find ourselves more in a position of trusting the Glaswegian to do whatever he wants in the market.

Of course, there may still be some misses, but there have been so many hits under the Scot in his role as Director of Football, that anybody who still doubts whether the recruitment team know what they’re doing should think again.
