'Super frustrated': £52m Chelsea player was so annoyed with how his season went - journalist

A lot of Chelsea players would have been disappointed with how last season went.

The Blues finished the campaign quite strongly, winning all of their final five Premier League fixtures.

It saw them creep into sixth place and qualify for the Europa Conference League. And had Manchester United not won the FA Cup, it would have been enough to secure them a place in the Europa League.

However, after failing to qualify for the Champions League, it would have gone down as a disappointing campaign overall.

And on an individual level, it also seems like some Chelsea players were not happy with how things played out.

Chelsea star annoyed with season

So many Chelsea players got injured last term, which undoubtedly impacted the team’s performance in the league.

That includes the likes of captain Reece James, vice-captain Ben Chilwell, Christopher Nkunku and Wesley Fofana.

Fofana was not even able to play a single minute of football under Mauricio Pochettino, showing just how serious his injury was.

As for Nkunku, he was only able to make 11 appearances in the Premier League, and that frustrated the forward.

Speaking about Nkunku on his Substack, journalist Simon Phillips said: “On Nkunku’s side, he has been super frustrated with how his first season has gone at Chelsea. He has been itching to play and wanting to help out when things have been really bad for Chelsea on the pitch this season.

“He’s grown very frustrated at not being able to help, like Wesley Fofana as well, and he is keen to get back on the pitch and play a key part in this project at Chelsea that he sees as a very exciting one.”

Not much Christopher Nkunku could have done

Nkunku should not be too hard on himself. He got injured during Chelsea’s last pre-season after playing on a bad pitch, which resulted in him missing the first-half of the 2023/24 campaign.

When the Frenchman was able to play, he did manage to make an impact at times. For example, it was his goal against Brighton & Hove Albion last month that proved to be the match-winner in his side’s 2-1 win at the Amex Stadium.

If Nkunku, who cost Chelsea £52m, can stay fit next season and fire Enzo Maresca‘s men into the top four, then he can put this campaign behind him.
