'Hard working' player has found new club in non-league after being released by Newcastle United

Plenty of Newcastle United players are currently looking for new clubs.

The Magpies announced their retained list last month, confirming the players who will be leaving St James’ Park when their contracts expire on June 30th.

The two biggest names that are leaving the club are Matt Ritchie and Paul Dummett. Excellent tributes have been paid to both players, with the former currently being linked with a move to Watford.

Newcastle are releasing five senior players this summer, none of which have found a new employer as of yet ahead of the 2024/25 season.

However, it is a different story for one of the Newcastle academy players who is not receiving a contract extension.

Dylan Stephenson finds a new club after Newcastle release

It came as no surprise to see Newcastle United announce that they would be releasing Dylan Stephenson at the end of the season.

The 21-year-old had failed to make the step up to the senior side, and spent the second half of the 2023/24 season on loan at National League North side South Shields.

The fact that Newcastle loaned him out up until the expiry of his contract was an indicator that they would be releasing him, and that has proven to be the case.

However, it has not taken Stephenson long to find a new club. It has been announced that he will be playing non-league football next season, with the forward signing a two-year deal with National League side Dagenham & Redbridge.

Stephenson is moving down to the capital, as he looks to finally make a proper impression at senior level.

Stephenson’s best Newcastle United moment came in Saudi Arabia

In a Newcastle United shirt, chances were limited for Stephenson. While he did play some first-team minutes in friendlies, he never actually made his competitive Toon debut.

In fact, his best moment for Newcastle came when the club were in Saudi Arabia in 2022, playing a friendly against Al-Hilal.

Stephenson got the chance to come on as a substitute, and actually managed to score in the 5-0 win thanks to an assist from Ryan Fraser.

After the game, Eddie Howe expressed how happy he was for Stephenson, describing him as a ‘hard working’ player.

Hopefully that trait serves him well in the National League, as he prepares for an important year in the fifth tier of English football with the Daggers. Good luck, Dylan!
