Report: What happened involving Anthony Gordon yesterday at England camp which Jack Grealish had no idea about

Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon is going to Euro 2024.

The 23-year-old has been included in Gareth Southgate’s final 26-man England squad, and will be travelling to Germany to represent the Three Lions this summer.

It is exactly what Anthony Gordon deserves after an incredible season. It has been the best campaign of the attacker’s career, proving a lot of people wrong and becoming one of Newcastle United’s best players.

It will be Gordon’s first ever major international tournament, after only making his England debut back in March. But Southgate has put his trust in a lot of inexperienced players like Gordon, with the likes of Adam Wharton, Eberechi Eze and Jarrod Bowen also set to compete at their first major tournament.

And that has meant some experienced players have missed out – most notably Jack Grealish.

How Anthony Gordon impacted England’s Jack Grealish decision

When news broke that James Maddison was not going to make the cut, it felt likely that Grealish would be included.

However, the big shock from Southgate’s squad announcement was the Manchester City attacker not receiving a place on the plane.

Grealish has not been selected for the Euros, and a new report from the Telegraph has detailed how Newcastle United‘s Anthony Gordon actually influenced Southgate’s decision.

According to the Telegraph, Grealish was not anticipating not being included in the final 26-man squad as the Three Lions trained on Thursday.

However, they report that Grealish’s place in the squad was dependent on Anthony Gordon’s fitness, with the Scouser ahead of Grealish in the pecking order.

The Toon talisman has been struggling with an ankle injury, but is now over it. The Telegraph report that once Southgate was informed that Gordon was fully fit, he informed Grealish that he would not be part of his Euro 2024 plans.

Gordon deserves England chance after blistering Newcastle United season

It is a major surprise to see Grealish miss out, but it is great to see Southgate pick players on form. Gordon has been one of the best wingers in the country, and much better than some of England’s other left-sided options.

Reputation could have seen Marcus Rashford and Grealish get in ahead of Gordon, but that would not have been fair. Gordon has been better than those players, and it is good to see Southgate acknowledge that.

With Gordon making the final squad ahead of Grealish, it will now be interesting to see how close the former Everton lad is to the starting XI. He is probably competing with Phil Foden and Eberechi Eze for a place in the starting lineup.

Gordon seems primed to play a major part for England, as the Three Lions bid to bring football home once and for all.
