Report: Newcastle are now interested in signing former Arsenal player with 'big potential'

Newcastle United midfielder Joe Willock could soon be reunited with one of his former Arsenal teammates according to reports in Italy.

Joe Willock has really taken his game to the next level since swapping Arsenal for Newcastle United, with the 24-year-old getting the regular first-team minutes that he needed to really kick on.

The 2023/24 season was a tough one for Willock, with injury meaning he only made 14 appearances out of a possible 51. But the hope is that he will be fit in time for pre-season, as he aims to make up for lost time in black and white.

And, if reports in Italy are to be believed, he could soon be joined by a player who was his teammate at Arsenal.

Newcastle United linked with signing Matteo Guendouzi

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Newcastle United are one of two Premier League clubs that are interested in signing Matteo Guendouzi from Lazio, with the other being Aston Villa.

They report that Aston Villa have already made an offer worth £21million for the Frenchman, while the Magpies are also now showing an interest.

Gazzetta dello Sport add that while Lazio want to retain his services, an offer of around £25million could be enough to convince them to sell.

Newcastle have been linked with Guendouzi before, but have no need for him right now

Guendouzi, who played at Arsenal alongside Willock and was called a player with ‘big potential‘ by Arsene Wenger, is an odd target for the Magpies.

However, rumours regarding the 25-year-old moving to Tyneside are not new. He was linked with a move to Newcastle United almost a year ago, while his name cropped up as a possible target for the Magpies shortly after the takeover in 2021.

On both of those occasions, it seemed strange to see Guendouzi linked with Newcastle, and it is even stranger in 2024.

That is because Eddie Howe has no need for another centre-midfielder, with the Newcastle boss set to have seven to choose from next season.

The only way that will change is if someone leaves, which is possible. Sean Longstaff has been linked with a move to Leicester City, while the big concern surrounds Bruno Guimaraes and his £100million release clause.

If either of those players leave, perhaps rumours of Guendouzi moving to Newcastle will make more sense. Until then, however, they do not make any sense at all.
