Report: £22m Newcastle United target now set to benefit from James Maddison snub

While two Newcastle United players wait to discover their fate, it looks like the end of the road for James Maddison and his Euro 2024 dreams.

After playing at St James’ Park on Monday, Gareth Southgate is set to cut seven players from his England squad and reduce it to 26 ahead of the Euros.

Anthony Gordon and Kieran Trippier are hoping to be included, and will fancy their chances. The former is on the back of the best season of his career, while the latter looks likely to start at left-back for the Three Lions after captaining them on Monday.

But while the Newcastle United duo hope to head to Germany, they will not be joined by James Maddison.

James Maddison to miss out on England’s Euro 2024 squad

The Tottenham Hotspur playmaker has been part of England’s 33-man squad, and was impressive off the bench against Bosnia And Herzegovina. However, it is not going to be enough for him to make the final 26-man squad.

That is according to the Telegraph, who report that Maddison has been informed that he will not be part of England’s final squad for Euro 2024.

They state that he has now left the training camp and will not be involved against Iceland on Friday, despite initially being pencilled in to start at Wembley.

It is a blow for Maddison, who signed for Tottenham last summer despite interest from Newcastle.

Maddison snub is good news for Newcastle target Jarrod Bowen

Maddison’s loss could be a Newcastle United target’s gain, with the Telegraph adding that the 27-year-old missing out could benefit Jarrod Bowen. They report that he is now likely to be included in Southgate’s final squad for the Euros.

The West Ham United attacker is on the Magpies’ radar this summer, with Eddie Howe keen to sign a new right winger. Bowen would be a very exciting addition to the Toon squad, although there are fears that he could cost far too much money.

Whether or not that is the case remains to be seen, but Newcastle officials could be braced for a chance to watch Bowen on the international stage. That will be a good test for the £22million winger, as the Magpies look for a player who can help them get back into the Champions League.

That is not a competition that Bowen has competed in before, but a strong showing at the Euros could prove to Toon scouts that he is certainly capable of taking that step up.

That is something that Anthony Gordon has done on Tyneside, and perhaps him and Trippier can have a word with Bowen about bringing his talents to the North East… Then again, we thought the same would happen when Maddison was surrounded by Newcastle players at the 2022 World Cup, and he ended up signing for Spurs!
