Smoke coming from the sewers? No problem, says Jersey City MUA

When residents in the West Side neighborhood reported smoke, and possible fire, coming from their sewers Monday morning, the Jersey City Fire Department leapt into action.

Where there’s smoke, there isn’t always fire, apparently. Sometimes it’s another city agency performing some duty without realizing the stir it may cause.

The smoke seen Monday morning in the area of Broadway and West Side Avenue just after 9 a.m. was the result of the city’s Municipal Utilities Authority (MUA) introducing a solvent into the sewer to liquefy grease deposited by homes and food establishments. city spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione said.

MUA officials met with the Fire Department to discuss the incident and has since created a notification process before using these solvent drops, Wallace-Scalcione said.
