David Knezevich, the estranged husband of missing woman Ana Knezevich, has denied any wrongdoing in connection with her alleged kidnapping in Spain.
Knezevich, 36, pleaded not guilty in a Miami court Monday.
David Ingber, the attorney representing Ana's family, said the defendant's not guilty plea is "par for the course, denying responsibility."
"His jovial appearance doesn't fit with his predicament," Ingber told HNGN in a statement, in part. "At some point, he should be struck by the strength of the evidence against him, changing his countenance."
Ana, 40, was first reported missing around Feb. 4, in the midst of a reportedly rocky divorce from her husband of 13 years.
Loved ones became concerned after allegedly receiving suspicious text messages from her phone stating she was going away with a man she had just met, and requested a welfare check.
Spanish firefighters were unable to locate Ana at her Madrid apartment, where she had been living in December since separating from Knezevich. Her cell phone, laptop and chargers were also missing, according to the FBI's criminal complaint.
Surveillance footage made public last week allegedly shows Knezevich buying spray paint and duct tape at a Madrid hardware store around the time Ana went missing, according to WPLG-TV and NewsNation.
Prosecutors allege Knezevich was also captured on video wearing a motorcycle helmet and mask, spray painting the lens of a security camera at Ana's apartment the day she vanished.
Investigators believe Knezevich was motivated by money in connection with his wife's disappearance and "did not want to split the marital assets evenly with the victim," the criminal complaint stated.
Knezevich was arrested at the Miami International Airport in May. Authorities have not commented on whether or not they believe Ana is still alive.
The search for Ana in Spain continues.
