Report: Leeds United in pole position to sign 'cultured defender' who has PL interest

Leeds United are in pole position to sign a ‘cultured defender’ who has interest from the Premier League, according to a recent report.

The Whites are preparing for another season in the Championship and the onus is on Daniel Farke to go up inside the top two.

Automatic promotion is a must as parachute payments will drop significantly next year, so this season is the final attempt to really flex their financial wealth and sign a number of top additions.

That said, it seems Leeds are in pole position to sign a ‘cultured defender’.

Leeds United in pole position to sign Anselmo Garcia MacNulty

According to Voetbal International, Leeds are in pole position to sign PEC Zwolle defender Anselmo Garcia MacNulty.

Leicester City had been linked with the 21-year-old but it’s understood that they have backed away from the deal following promotion to the Premier League.

Born in Sevilla, MacNulty plies his trade for the Republic of Ireland’s under-21s, qualifying through his mother.

In his short career, he’s played in Spain, Germany and now the Netherlands – where he plays senior football in the Eredivisie.

Newly promoted Premier League side Southampton have previously been credited with an interest in MacNulty.

Anselmo Garcia MacNulty statistics

MacNulty enjoyed a productive season last term and his FBref statistics make for very impressive reading.

The left-footed defender ranks in the top 17 per cent for tackles compared to his positional peers across Europe.

Further, he sits in the top 20 per cent for aeriel duels won, amplifying his physicality and ability in the air.

Aged only 21, MacNulty has plenty of time to develop and would be a great addition for Leeds in their automatic promotion bid.
