Aston Villa target Denzel Dumfries wows on international duty

On Monday night, the Netherlands were in action against Iceland in their final game before the Euros kick-off.

Oranje won 4-0, with £26m Villa target Denzel Dumfries playing a starring role in his nation’s victory.

The right-back played 76 minutes, claiming one assist, winning seven duels and recording two key passes in a rounded display, as per Sofascore.

It was a record-breaking night for the Inter Milan star, as he overtook Daley Blind as being the Netherlands’ highest goal-contributing defender in history.

Dumfries’ assist was his 19th goal involvement for his country, surpassing Blind’s 18, showcasing just how impressive he is at playing progressively.

Unai Emery would have been impressed by Dumfries

If an attacking fullback who doesn’t compromise his defensive duties is what Emery wants, then Dumfries is certainly the best man for the job.

The 28-year-old, who was once lauded as an ‘incredible athlete’ by journalist Luke Bosher via The Athletic, showcased his ability at international level once more amid links to Villa.

Dutch media were equally as impressed with the defender’s showing, as outlet Voetbalprimeur handed the right-back a 7.5/10 rating, saying he had a ‘great game’.

It will be interesting to see how Villa approach their interest in Dumfries, particularly with the Euros coming up and all eyes set to be on the Dutchman’s performances in the tournament.

Emery certainly needs a new right-back this summer, and the Netherlands international could be the ideal suitor for the manager’s needs at Villa Park, showing defensive strength and attacking prowess.

If the right-back’s display against Iceland is anything to go by, then Villa could face increased competition for the rumoured target.
