£60m Liverpool target picks up last minute muscle injury and could miss Euro 2024

Liverpool supporters have plenty to be interested in as Euro 2024 gets underway on Friday.

It has been a barren three-and-a-bit weeks since the Reds called time on their season and said goodbye to Jurgen Klopp.

We haven’t heard or seen anything of Arne Slot since he started life at Anfield and the transfer window is still yet to fully swing open.

As a result, Liverpool fans have had to make do with getting their teeth into some international football. Thankfully, there’s lots of that around. Virgil van Dijk was the latest to excel in the pre-Euros friendlies on Monday.

It was not all good news from the Netherlands 4-0 win over Iceland, though. Cody Gakpo has had a disappointing write-up, while there was a potential blow to Liverpool’s transfer plans, too.

Teun Koopmeiners injured ahead of Euro 2024

The Netherlands could well be the default team of choice for Liverpool supporters looking for someone to back in Germany this summer.

Ronald Koeman has called three players up from the Liverpool squad, with Ryan Gravenberch joining Van Dijk and Gakpo.

As well as that trio though, the Reds have also been linked with a couple more members of Koeman’s team.

Back-up goalkeeper Justin Bijlow has been presented as a target as Liverpool look to find a suitable replacement for Caoimhin Kelleher.

The links with Bijlow have been tentative though, compared to the clamour to pronounce Teun Koopmeiners as a Liverpool player in waiting.

As recently as Monday, Koopmeiners was said to be towards the top of the Reds transfer shortlist, while the likes of journalist Fabrizio Romano have previously reported Liverpool’s interest.

Unfortunately though, it’s Romano who delivers an update which could well harm any chance Koopmeiners has of a move to Anfield. Taking to X on Tuesday morning, the journalist confirms that the 26-year-old has picked up a muscle injury.

“Not only Frenkie de Jong. Teun Koopmeiners also suffered an injury and tests will clarify if he has to leave the national team,” Romano reports. “It’s muscle injury for Koopmeiners.”

Injury should end Teun Koopmeiners interest

It’s clear to see why Liverpool would like Koopmeiners. The Dutchman has had a superb season for Atalanta and was impressive at Anfield back in April.

However, at 26, Koopmeiners is older than the kind of profile FSG tend to go for. It would also reportedly cost around £60m to sign Koopmeiners.

While not necessarily bad value, this money can be better invested in other areas of the Liverpool squad, such as at centre-back.

Although it remains to be seen just how bad Koopmeiners’ injury is, the Reds also need new signings who can come in and work under Slot immediately.

There’s too much being changed at Anfield as it is this summer, any additions should be ready to hit the ground running in pre-season.

If Koopmeiners can’t do that, it should be the final coffin in any potential move to Liverpool.
