Report: Newcastle have now told 'wonderful' player he can leave, his replacement has agreed Toon move

It could be a case of one goalkeeper in, one goalkeeper out at Newcastle United very soon.

While the Magpies have already announced that Loris Karius is not staying at St James’ Park beyond this summer, another goalkeeper could be on his way out.

It has previously been reported that Martin Dubravka is likely to be sold by Newcastle United, despite making 30 appearances for the Magpies last season.

The 35-year-old took Nick Pope’s place in the side after the England international suffered a shoulder injury, but struggled to roll back the years. While there was the odd strong performance, including a ‘wonderful’ display in the FA Cup away to Blackburn, Dubravka hindered the way in which Newcastle defend.

Now he could be on his way out of St James’ Park, and it appears that he has a suitor.

Celtic interested in Martin Dubravka as Newcastle exit looms

According to TalkSPORT, Newcastle United have told Martin Dubravka that he is free to leave the club this summer as he heads into the final year of his Toon contract.

TalkSPORT add that Celtic are interested in signing the Slovakia international, as they eye a new number one to replace Joe Hart following his retirement.

However, TalkSPORT also report that Dubravka has interest from Saudi Arabia.

Newcastle United have already lined up Dubravka’s replacement

A move away from St James’ Park appears to be on the cards for Dubravka, at a time when Newcastle United are trying to sign another goalkeeper.

It would appear that Toon officials already have Dubravka’s replacement lined up, with the club bidding to sign James Trafford from Burnley.

It has been reported that the 21-year-old has already agreed personal terms with Newcastle, who still need to settle on a fee with the Clarets. They are looking to receive £20million, while Newcastle value him at £18million.

Trafford would arrive on Tyneside as an understudy to Nick Pope, taking Dubravka’s place as the second choice goalkeeper at St James’ Park.

It would be a step in the right direction, as Trafford is a player with a lot of potential who has scope to improve massively. In contrast, Dubravka is 14 years older and on the decline.

With his contract expiring in 2025, it is right for Newcastle to move him on now. Whether it is to Celtic or a club in Saudi Arabia, a departure seems to be on the cards.

You have to imagine that a move to Parkhead would appeal. It did wonders for Joe Hart’s career, while it would also give Dubravka the chance to lift some silverware and continue playing in Europe – something that will not happen at Newcastle United next season.
