Aston Villa ‘seeking legal advice’ as Sawiris slams PSR rule impacting summer transfer plans

Aston Villa co-owner Nassef Sawiris has shared his verdict on the current financial rulings surrounding the Premier League.

Aston Villa have many people the thank for their rise back to the big time since gaining promotion in 2019.

The majority of praise is directed to Unai Emery, who has elevated the club’s performance on the pitch although, owners NSWE also deserve significant credit.

Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens’ impressive approach to ownership of the Premier League side has seen Villa rise through the ranks over the years.

In 2018, NSWE set a checklist detailing how they’d like the future to look at Villa Park, with many milestones already met.

Despite all of the work done behind the scenes at Villa to ensure progression, Sawiris has now expressed his dissatisfaction at one issue plaguing the club.

Aston Villa owner Nassef Sawiris shares PSR verdict amid club’s financial concerns

Despite qualifying for the Champions League, Aston Villa are facing PSR concerns that put the club in a difficult position this summer.

Such rulings have seen Premier League clubs face punishment such as a point deduction, something Villa must avoid on their road to progression.

In light of the club’s PSR concerns, Sawiris sat down with the Financial Times for an interview, sharing his thoughts on the situation.

The Egyptian described profit and sustainability rules as being “anti-competitive”, relaying that he is seeking legal advice regarding the possibility of launching a formal complaint against the Premier League.

“Some of the rules have actually resulted in cementing the status quo more than creating upward mobility and fluidity in the sport. The rules do not make sense and are not good for football.”

“Managing a sports team has become more like being a treasurer or a bean counter rather than looking at what your team needs. It’s more about creating paper profits, not real profits. It becomes a financial game, not a sporting game.”

Sawiris’ issues with PSR are shared by many associated with football, with Villa’s current concerns making progression far more difficult than it needs to be.

Villa will have a difficult summer because of PSR

Clubs are scrambling to get their books in order ahead of June 30th, with Villa having work to do if they are to make moves in the summer.

For all of Villa’s efforts last term, Emery will now be in a sell-to-buy situation this summer, meaning at least one key player could depart.

As well as needing to offload for profit to spend, the club are expected to need to part ways with higher earners, also jeopardising the progression of Emery’s squad.

Diego Carlos’ future has been speculated as a result however, the primary concern lies with Douglas Luiz, who looks to be the player who will depart this summer.

Juventus are one of the sides exploring a deal for the Brazilian, whom Villa would presumably not be looking to part ways with if it wasn’t for PSR.

It’s a great shame for Villa and a worrying time for clubs in the Premier League wanting to progress without financial burdens.
