Pedestrian struck, killed by vehicle in Essex County town over weekend

A 76-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed by a pickup Saturday morning in Livingston, officials said.

Usha Bhagat was hit at about 11:50 a.m. at the intersection of Royal Avenue and East Cedar Street as she crossed the street, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said Tuesday.

Bhagat, of Livington, was brought to an area hospital where she died of her injuries the following afternoon, authorities said.

The driver stopped and spoke to police after the crash. No charges have been filed.

The fatal crash is the first in Livingston since April 27, 2022, when a pedestrian was stuck by a hit-and-run driver in the area of South Orange Avenue and Goodhart Drive shortly before 11 p.m., according to Livingston police and State Police fatal crash data.
