One injured in fire at Jersey City senior high-rise building

One person was injured and an apartment was severely damaged in a fire at high-rise building for senior citizens in Downtown Jersey City late Monday night, authorities said.

Jersey City firefighters responded to the 13-story senior building at 500 Manila Ave., also known as Unico Towers, at 11 p.m. and found a fire in a second-floor unit, Jersey City spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione said.

A 75-year-old was rescued from the apartment and taken to a local hospital to be treated from smoke inhalation and minor burns to the ears and nose, Wallace-Scalcione said. No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire, which left the apartment with substantial damage, is under investigation.
