Report: Mikel Arteta and Arsenal still hope to ruin one potential Rangers transfer as Koppen plan continues

Rangers continue to hunt for exciting young signings but may find that Arsenal attempt to kibosh one potential deal.

Nils Koppen is leading his first summer transfer window at Rangers and his approach seems fairly clear.

Rangers appear to be focusing on landing young players with big potential, attempting to rake in money down the line.

Left back Jefte has arrived after first being targeted in January whilst winger Oscar Cortes is back on loan from Lens.

Rangers struck another interesting deal this week with defender Clinton Nsiala arriving from AC Milan.

Add in strong interest in Uruguayan midfielder Damian Garcia and Rangers seem to be casting the net far and wide in search of top prospects with Koppen still planning to bring more young players in.

Rangers face Reuell Walters fight

Another talent was linked earlier in June with Arsenal defender Reuell Walters on the wish list.

Reports suggest that Rangers are keen to bring Walters to Ibrox with his Arsenal contract expiring this summer.

Walters announced his intention to leave Arsenal in May but Arsenal have since suggested that he is still in discussions with the club about a new deal.

Arsenal seemingly aren’t giving up hope of keeping Walters in North London and more reports have emerged about his future.

The Athletic claim that Walters is ‘resolute’ in his wishes to leave Arsenal and chase playing time elsewhere.

However, Arsenal are described as being ‘optimistic’ that they can change Walters’ mind and tempt him into staying after all.

The Gunners have a number of quality defenders already, including William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes, Ben White and the returning Jurrien Timber.

Few would blame Walters for feeling that he just can’t break into the team whilst those players are in the mix – even if Mikel Arteta rates him.

Rangers have a real youth movement going right now and if the promise of first-team action at Ibrox can be delivered, Walters would surely be tempted to make the move.

Who is Rangers target Walters?

Walters had a pretty remarkable path to Arsenal.

The 19-year-old was in the Tottenham Hotspur ranks as a kid but didn’t enjoy his time there, causing him to leave the club.

Yet with Tottenham holding him to a contract, Walters spent time out of the game before joining their bitter rivals Arsenal.

Walters has risen through the Arsenal ranks and even picked up caps for England at Under-18, Under-19 and Under-20 levels.

A right back or centre back, Walters has been around the Arsenal first team under Arteta and understandably wants minutes to further his career.

If Arsenal can’t convince Walters that those chances will come, Rangers may well be in the box seat for another exciting deal.
