Report: How Newcastle are feeling as Chelsea 'suddenly' make move to sign £60m PL player

Chelsea are once again proving to be a problem for Newcastle United in the transfer market.

The Magpies had planned to have their defensive reinforcements sorted out by now, but are only halfway there.

Lloyd Kelly is set to sign for the Magpies, with the 25-year-old having agreed a contract to join Newcastle United very soon.

Newcastle had planned to bring him in alongside Tosin Adarabioyo, but Chelsea ended that dream. They swooped in to sign the former Manchester City man, despite Toon officials being confident that he was on his way to St James’ Park.

The Magpies are interested in adding Michael Olise to their squad, but face competition from Enzo Maresca’s side. It was even reported that the Blues had already agreed personal terms with the 22-year-old, but that may have been premature.

However, according to 90min, Chelsea are the club that is seemingly the most advanced in the race to sign Olise from Crystal Palace.

They report that Chelsea are ‘suddenly’ targeting the attacker, having almost signed him last year.

How Newcastle feel about Chelsea’s Olise interest

90min state that Chelsea are trying to get a deal done fast, but that is not a concern for Newcastle United and Olise’s other suitors. They report that the likes of Newcastle are not worried about falling behind Chelsea, due to the fact that Olise is expected to take his time when deciding who to join this summer.

That means that time is on Eddie Howe’s side, as he eyes a transformative right winger to join Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon in attack.

But while Newcastle are not out of the race, there are a few issues. Firstly, the Magpies cannot offer Olise European football, which might be a problem. On top of that, he is going to be very expensive.

Olise is going to cost around £60million, which is only slightly less than what Newcastle paid for Isak in 2022 – in what was a club record transfer.

Given all of those factors, it is difficult to envision Olise signing for Newcastle United this summer. While they might not be worried about Chelsea making a move, the biggest concern could be at their own doorstep.
