Gary Neville predicts what Gareth Southgate will do with Trent Alexander-Arnold vs Serbia

Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold will be desperate to start for England in their Euro 2024 opener.

The Three Lions kick their tournament off against Serbia this weekend, followed by meetings with Denmark and Slovenia.

And there is plenty of pressure on Gareth Southgate to get things right, with the manager really not allowed to make any mistakes given what is at stake.

One major decision will undoubtedly involve Alexander-Arnold, with the debate ongoing as to what his best position is.

The defender has largely played at right-back throughout his career, but has been included as a midfielder in the England squad.

And it is the latter role which fans of the country want to see him play in this summer, with Alexander-Arnold having shone there in the recent friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has now weighed in on the debate, predicting what Southgate will do with Alexander-Arnold against Serbia.

“I think he will put Trent in there for Sunday,” Neville said on The Overlap. “And I think that will be deemed as an acceptable bridge between given us Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice and what will be the more, it’s not sexy is it Conor Gallagher?”

The Old Trafford legend did, however, predict that Southgate will eventually turn to Chelsea ace Gallagher.

England should start with Liverpool star against Serbia

Serbia could provide England with their toughest test in Group C, with the country certain to be more than up for producing an upset early on.

And while defensive questions remain over Alexander-Arnold, the Liverpool star should be handed a starting role thanks to his passing ability.

The Reds ace has the ability to unlock defences with his sublime range of passing, which could be the difference in Germany.

Moreover, Southgate can rely on Rice to do the dirty work in midfield, with Bellingham also not afraid of getting stuck in.

Nerves could also play a part at the major tournament, but Alexander-Arnold has played in countless massive games for club and country over the years.

A midfield role at Euro 2024 this summer for the Anfield man could give his club manager Arne Slot plenty to think about, with former England striker Gary Lineker really eager to see the Dutchman play Alexander-Arnold in that role next season.
