The Crimson Countdown is officially on for the 2024 Oklahoma football season. Fans have been waiting for what feels like forever with this one. The Sooners are finally and officially joining the SEC.
The 2023 season was a rebound one for head coach Brent Venables, getting the program back to its standard. OU went 10-3 in Venables’ second season, now it’s time for year No. 3.

Crimson Countdown: No. 79 Jake Taylor
2023 stats: Played in four games at tackle, redshirted.
2024 outlook:
After playing as a guard as a true freshman, Taylor was a tackle last season. However, he only played four games. And it felt strategic as if OU shut him down when he reached that fourth game. There were still plenty of games left to go.
Taylor was still working at tackle during spring football for OU. It’s clear he’s providing good depth, good help at practice. What we’ll learn this season is if there is anything more to it?
The door is open for Taylor to come in and make an imprint. We’ll have a much better idea of what Taylor’s future at OU looks like by the time August and September roll around. Depth? Or a real contender?
2024 offensive tackle outlook
It’s no secret where the biggest concern is for Oklahoma in 2024 — offensive tackle. Replacing Tyler Guyton and Walter Rouse is no easy task. OU brought in transfer Michael Tarquin (USC) and Spencer Brown (Michigan State). Both have a chance to start next season, especially Tarquin at left tackle. Jacob Sexton is also expected to be in the mix, having played right tackle last season. But during the spring, Sexton also played guard. OU is hoping Jake Taylor can be a contributor at tackle in this third season, while redshirt freshman Logan Howland continues to progress in a backup role.
