Joe Crann has now explained the ‘big’ reason why Will Vaulks decided to leave Sheffield Wednesday this week.
After making 34 appearances last season, Will Vaulks was one of many senior players who were offered a new contract by Sheffield Wednesday.
However, rumours emerged that the midfielder could still be on his way out of the club, before it was confirmed yesterday that he had rejected a deal and had joined Oxford United instead.
There was plenty of disappointment and confusion over Vaulks’ exit, however The Star journalist Joe Crann has now explained that there is a pretty simple reason as to why he chose to leave.
Will Vaulks was offered a three-year deal by Oxford United
Writing on X, he said: “Oxford United offered Will Vaulks a three-year deal to leave #SWFC, and my understanding is that they simply showed more of a desire to have him on their books than Wednesday did… Played a big part in his decision.”
According to The Star, Vaulks wasn’t initially looking to leave Hillsborough until he entered discussions with Oxford.
Des Buckingham’s side then offered the 30-year-old a three-year deal, while the Owls didn’t quite ‘match Oxford’s ambition’ when it came to including him in their plans for the 2024/25 season.
Will Vaulks wanted a key position in the midfield next season
It’s unclear what Wednesday had offered Vaulks, but it seems pretty obvious that he may not have played quite as much of an important role as he will at the Kassam Stadium.
Wednesday’s only remaining senior central midfielder is Barry Bannan now, but they were likely to have massively upgraded their midfield this summer and Vaulks understandably wants to feel pivotal wherever he decided to go.
It does leave the Owls in a sticky position, but they have seemingly been very proactive with their transfer business so far and have left supporters with nothing major to be concerned about in terms of their recruitment.
