'Seriously good': Journalist gives verdict on rumours linking Sheffield Wednesday to 'excellent' defender

Sheffield Wednesday have been told they will have to pay a ‘substantial fee’ to sign one of their targets.

Sheffield Wednesday are working hard behind the scenes to tie down defensive duo Di’Shon Bernard and Dominic Iorfa to new contracts.

The Owls are hopeful that their backline can go undisturbed this summer, though they will also look to add reinforcements too.

After avoiding relegation, Danny Rohl is eager to bolster his squad in a bid to push for a place in the top half of the Championship next season.

To do so, reports have claimed he is actually looking to a recently relegated player in Cameron Humphreys.

The 25-year-old joined Rotherham United in 2022 and has been a regular in the team ever since.

Despite The Millers’ relegation, he has been an important figure for Wednesday’s local rivals and could now look to earn himself a move back to the Championship.

Sheffield Wednesday could sign a ‘seriously good’ defender

Journalist Alan Biggs has heaped praise on Humphreys and has admitted the Owls will have to pay a ‘substantial fee’.

He wrote on X: “Many silly transfer rumours but the one linking #SWFC with #RUFC’s Cameron Humphreys among the more logical. Seriously good centre back. Excellent passing out; can see he was schooled at Man City. Rotherham would ask a substantial fee if selling & rightly so.”

Humphreys will be entering the final year of his contract at Rotherham next season, while the drop down to League One could encourage the defender to push for a move away.

Those factors will surely contribute to the fee that Rotherham will demand, though it could well be the increasing interest in his signature that could bump it up.

It is believed that Millwall, QPR and Swansea City are all interested in signing the centre-back too, and a bidding war could mean one club would have to pay above his £761k market value.

Who would Cameron Humphreys replace?

Humphreys could be a solid signing for Wednesday, but it begs the question as to who is likely to find themselves on the bench next term.

The Owls’ backline really impressed in the latter stages of the campaign and will surely be desperate to prove themselves this time round.

With Dominic Iorfa’s contract still on the table, it will be interesting to see whether he is prepared to put pen to paper if he potentially doesn’t have a place in the starting line-up.
