£32m Chelsea player is surely going to be a starter under Enzo Maresca after recent developments - opinion

With a new manager in Enzo Maresca coming in, there could be a lot of change at Chelsea next season.

Some players may be sweating about their places, with Tosin Adarabioyo having already arrived to put pressure on Chelsea‘s current set of centre-backs.

In recent weeks, one Chelsea star definitely would have been worried about his spot in the team.

All of a sudden, though, he now looks to be in a much safer position.

Chelsea’s interesting week in the transfer market

This week could actually be quite significant in Chelsea’s 2024/25 campaign.

The club discovered that they would not be signing RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko after the 21-year-old decided to remain in Germany.

Sesko was a target for Chelsea, with it being previously claimed that they made signing him this summer a priority.

With Sesko no longer an option for them, Chelsea have seemingly turned their attention to Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran. One journalist has even claimed that the Blues have already agreed a deal with their Premier League rivals to sign him.

Nicolas Jackson could now keep his starting spot

The arrival of Sesko would have undoubtedly seen Nicolas Jackson drop down to the bench.

Sesko would have been an expensive signing for Chelsea, with the Slovenian having reportedly had a £55m release clause in his previous contract. The expectation would have been for him to become Chelsea’s first-choice striker.

Jackson, though, will fancy his chances against Duran. The Colombian is a couple years younger than Jackson and has only scored five Premier League goals since arriving in the division last January.

Jackson managed to score 14 during the 2023/24 campaign. Ultimately, you cannot argue that Duran is an upgrade on Jackson.

Considering that and the fact that Sesko will not be joining Chelsea this summer, the Senegal international could easily finish another season as the team’s main striker.

If that turns out to be the case, then the former Villarreal man, who Chelsea spent £32m on, needs to be more clinical to boost his team’s chances of returning to the Champions League.
