Pat Nevin shares what Andy Robertson won’t say ‘out loud’ about Scotland ahead of Euro 2024

Andy Robertson endured a tricky season for Liverpool, with the left-back’s time on the pitch disrupted by injury.

The 30-year-old was limited to just 30 appearances in all competitions in Jurgen Klopp’s final campaign at Anfield, playing just 23 league games.

Such injury struggles have now spilled over on to the international scene, with the Liverpool left-back forced out of a recent Scotland training session.

It has, however, emerged that the withdrawal from training was just a precaution, with the captain set to play against Germany later this week.

Andy Robertson’s Scotland plans shared ahead of Euro 2024

Picking up points over the coming weeks will be a huge task for Steve Clarke’s side, having been handed a very tough group in Germany.

But according to former Scotland international Pat Nevin, star players such as Robertson will have grand plans for the tournament, even if they won’t admit it.

“Hopes are that we get out of the group,” Nevin told BBC Sport. “It’s going to be a tough group with Germany, Switzerland and Hungary.

“Scotland have never got out of a group stage at a World Cup or Euros before so that would be very good for us.

“The Germans will be favourites to win the group, but there are real hopes that Scotland could get second place – and remember third place might be enough as well.

“If we do get out of the group, the manager Steve Clarke will say that is plenty but a lot of the players are at the top level.

“Do Andy Robertson, Kieran Tierney or John McGinn think getting out of the group is far enough? No they don’t. They will want to go further than that, but they won’t say it out loud.”

All of Robertson’s current focus will be on progressing as far as possible in Germany, with the left-back having not spoken to his new club manager Arne Slot yet due to his international priorities.

But he certainly isn’t the only Liverpool player who will be busy with their respective nations over the next month.

And Robertson will come up against one of those players in the near future, with Scotland soon taking on Dominik Szoboszlai’s Hungary.

The midfielder has been backed by his manager Marco Rossi to shine at the major tournament, with Szoboszlai set to wear the armband for his nation.

Elsewhere, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez are in the England setup, with the Netherlands having three Reds players among their ranks in Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch.

Ibrahima Konate has also made the cut with France, with Diogo Jota and Vitezslav Jaros called up by Portugal and the Czech Republic respectively.
