A New Jersey man was found guilty Monday of robbing a Neptune Township convenience store in 2023, the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office announced Wednesday.

William Herndon, 41, of Neptune Township, was convicted of first-degree armed robbery following a jury trial, according to a news release.

Herndon waved a sawed-off shotgun at an employee of a 7-Eleven on Route 35 South in the township shortly before 1 a.m. on March 31, 2023, as they tried to give him change, according to the news release. He reached over the counter in an attempt to take money out of the cash register before fleeing from the store.

He was arrested on April 18, 2023, and held at the Monmouth County Correctional Institution, according to a news release. Herndon is scheduled to be sentenced by state Superior Court Judge Christie Bevacqua on Aug. 30 and faces up to 20 years in state prison.
