Jewel thief who stole $800K worth of gems sentenced to prison

A Brooklyn man was sentenced to four years in prison Wednesday for a string of jewelry heists that netted over $800,000 in stolen goods, U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger said.

Tony Newton, 62, of Brooklyn, New York previously pleaded guilty to a federal indictment charging him with two counts of interstate transportation of stolen goods.

Federal prosecutors said on June 1, 2022 and July 16, 2022, Newton transported stolen jewelry from Middlesex and Union counties into New York. Besides two burglaries in New Jersey, Newton admitted to robbing two other jewelry stores in Bay Shore, New York and Milford, Connecticut, authorities said.

In total, the four burglaries caused $804,227 in retail losses, according to authorities.

Newton was sentenced to three years supervised release by Federal Judge Claire C. Cecchi, in addition to his prison sentence.

An attorney for Newton did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
