Report: Serie A club have just opened talks to sign Sheffield Wednesday summer transfer target

A team in Serie A has now open talks to sign a player wanted by Sheffield Wednesday this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday already have a host of players linked with a summer move to Hillsborough, ahead of the transfer window opening on June 14th.

Danny Rohl looks set to oversee a very active summer transfer window in S6 and he may well have his first two signings lined up.

Free agent goalkeeper Ben Hamer is set to join Sheffield Wednesday, whilst departing Sheffield United full-back Max Lowe is reportedly set to join the Owls as well.

The pair’s arrival early in the summer would be a statement of intent from Sheffield Wednesday and owner Dejphon Chansiri.

The Owls certainly need a big summer if they’re to beat the drop again next season, following their miraculous 20th place finish in the Championship last time round.

It looks as though Rohl is keen on bolstering his attacking department more than anything with several attackers linked.

Karamoko Dembele, Ovie Ejaria, Mika Biereth, Ike Ugbo and Ian Poveda are among the names linked, along with Duncan McGuire.

Orlando City striker McGuire now has interest from Serie A outfit Torino, who have reportedly opened talks over a possible summer move for the striker.

Torino open talks to sign Sheffield Wednesday target Duncan McGuire

An emerging report from Italian outlet Tutto Mercato Web has revealed that Torino, who finished in 9th place of the Serie A table last season, are interested in McGuire.

The USA forward has scored five goals in 13 MLS appearances so far this season, having seen his links to Sheffield Wednesday reignited.

The Owls, along with Blackburn Rovers, tried and failed to sign McGuire during the January transfer window.

McGuire has reported interest from Germany and Belgium, with Torino now having joined the race to sign the 23-year-old.

Tutto Mercato Web say that Torino are ‘studying the profile’ of McGuire, who has recently returned from a shoulder injury, and that ‘contacts underway with the player’s entourage’.

McGuire is out of contract at the end of this year; he’s not been selected in the USMNT for this summer’s Copa America but is thought to be in reserve if someone get’s injured.

The stance that Sheffield Wednesday need to take on Duncan McGuire

Even in January, McGuire seemed like a signing that was slightly too expensive for the Owls, who remain on a tight budget.

Whilst signing McGuire may well be within Chansiri’s price range, as January proved, it surely leaves Rohl with very little for other potential signings.

Sheffield Wednesday have Yan Valery on their radar and he could cost £500,000, along with other players like Ugbo who’ll surely command a decent transfer fee.

And a move for Ugbo over McGuire may make a lot more sense; Ugbo’s parent club Troyes have just been relegated to the French third tier and so that could drop his price tag, and Ugbo is already someone who Rohl knows and trusts.

With Torino now in the race for McGuire, it surely boosts his asking price given their Serie A status, and the fact that it’s another team in an already-growing transfer chase may also boost the price, as Orlando can up the price knowing he’s in demand.

It looks like Sheffield Wednesday’s chances of a deal for McGuire are steadily decreasing.
