Rangers-linked striker red flag sees comparison drawn with SPFL journeyman

Rangers have been linked with several new forwards as Philippe Clement looks to add mroe goals and creativity to his attack.

A deal for Albion Rrahmani is said to be close and Yusuf Kabadayi is also reported to be on his way to Glasgow to join the manager’s extensive squad rebuild.

Another name, who has been linked in the past, has reemerged in the shape of Tommy Conway as his contract ticks down at Bristol City and Rangers consider their options – is the Scotland international worth the effort?

Tommy Conway linked with Rangers move

At 21-years old, Conway has done well to establish himself in a Championship club at such a young age.

He has made 92 appearances already and scored 25 goals in the process.

In terms of style of play, using Data MB’s radar facility, Conway compares with another striker capped by Steve Clarke – Eamonn Brophy.

He’s hard working, will press all game and give defenders a nightmare 90 minutes – is he good enough for Rangers though?

However, there are doubts about his goalscoring ability and the potential for him to go from promising, to a player capable of leading the line at the highest level.

Strikers who work hard, hassle centre-halves and are good team players are 10 a penny.

Nils Koppen has to make Tommy Conway gamble decision

Rangers need forwards who are clinical and can be trusted to take the one chance that falls to them to win the game rather than needing five to score once.

With just a year left on his contract, what City demand for Conway this summer could be interesting.

Premier League finances have drifted into England’s second tier and some of the transfer fees are exorbitant.

Despite being a Scotland international, Conway counts as a home-grown player for English clubs and could be an attractive proposition for clubs with European ambitions.

For Rangers, Nils Koppen would be better trying to bring someone like Rory Wilson back to the club or Dire Mebude who spent his formative years at Auchenhowie.

As always though, if the price is right, Rangers should always entertain signing players with potential, but it is hard to gauge what level Conway is at.

This is the difficult aspect of recruitment.

What players can handle the pressure of 50,000 fans at Ibrox groaning when a chance is missed?

What players will thrive and kick on to the next level, become a fans favourite before being sold at a profit?

All Koppen and his recruitment team can do is crunch the numbers, watch the videos and speak to the coaches and players who know the targets to make the best guesses.

The reality is, there is no black and white solution and calculated risks will always be the path taken.

How much of a risk Conway would be for the benefits he could offer is the decision that Koppen and co have to make.
