'We want to go far for him': £3m striker sees club look to break budget for Rangers transfer

Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen have their work cut out to make money out of some of the Rangers players who aren’t going to be part of the club moving forwards.

One member of the squad who falls into this bracket is Sam Lammers, despite an excellent loan spell in the Eredivisie where he scored 11 goals and three assists in 20 games for Utrecht.

A spell that fired the underdogs to the Champions League and has seen them keen to keep the Rangers striker, but it looks like they are going to have competition for his signature.

Rangers given Sam Lammers encouragement with Twente interest

According to Voetbal International, a Dutch media site, FC Twente are keeping tabs on Lammers situation if they can’t sign Wout Weghorst.

Speaking to VI, Arnold Bruggink, the technical director of Twente was coy when asked about targeting the Gers playmaker:

“We also have a very good striker at FC Twente.

“So, it is not that we need someone there immediately.

“By the end of the European Championship we will things will get going as usual.

“We are not panicking.”

You almost feel sorry for Utrecht who took the gamble on Sam Lammers when he was bang out of form and played him in his more natural and preferred number nine position – an inspired decision in the end.

Bruggink’s counterpart at Utrecht, Jordy Zuidam, has been significantly more open about his desires for the transfer window:

“He is a very important link in our team, so we want to go far for him.

“It is above our ceiling, but we are now looking for a solution.”

Rangers hold all the cards in Sam Lammers transfer race

In short, they are desperate to re-sign Lammers.

Rangers paid £3m to Atalanta last summer and, after his Eredivisie form, they should be looking for more or, at the very least, their money back.

It is the sort of money that could go a long way to pay for someone like Lawrence Shankland or the recently linked Albion Rrahmani, who Nils Koppen has already held talks over.

Rangers won’t want to wait for any teams making bids later in the window, they will want the money in as soon as possible and the space freed up in the squad.

It’s an incredible turnaround for a player who Michael Beale hyped up before his arrival only to miss a series of big chances that showed Lammers just didn’t have the mentality to cope with the pressure of being a Rangers player.

If Rangers make a profit out of Sam Lammers, Nils Koppen should be given a pay rise.
