Warne should repeat Lampard trick at Derby County to land 'fabulous' Leeds target this summer - opinion

Paul Warne could repeat Frank Lampard’s transfer success at Derby County by loaning a ‘fabulous’ player from the Premier League.

Frank Lampard very nearly steered Derby County into the Premier League in his one season at Pride Park.

The Rams lost against Aston Villa in the Championship play-off final in 2018/19 while Lampard had a squad littered with talented loan players, including Mason Mount.

Lampard used his Chelsea connections to loan Mount from Stamford Bridge and it proved to be an inspired decision as the midfielder scored eight goals and supplied five assists in 35 appearances.

Current Derby boss, Paul Warne should follow that success of dipping into the loan market and acquiring a player from Tottenham.

Warne has a blank canvas to build from in midfield following the departures of Max Bird, Conor Hourihane and Korey Smith.

Derby are looking to bring Ebou Adams back on a permanent deal, although the engine room still needs some added quality and Oliver Skipp could provide that.

Skipp is an exceptional ball-playing midfielder, capable of dictating the pace of a game and caressing passes through the thirds.

Despite starting just five times under Ange Postecoglu last term, the 23-year-old did show his quality by ranking in the top 2% of Premier League midfielders for pass completion (91.6%) and the top 9% for dribblers tackled.

With the Englishman unlikely to play regularly for Tottenham next season, Derby could snap him up on a loan deal, though they may have to fend off interest from a fellow Championship side.

Leeds United want Oliver Skipp

Leeds have struck up a solid relationship with Spurs after loaning Joe Rodon and Djed Spence from them last term, with the former starring in their promotion push.

According to the Athletic, Daniel Farke wants to dip into the pool of talent at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium once more by prising Skipp to Elland Road.

The Whites narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League, losing to Southampton in the play-off final, and are looking to strengthen for another shot at glory.

A loan move to a side battling near the top would be an enticing proposition for Skipp, as opposed to a team that has just come up from League One however, Warne would be able to guarantee him a starting berth every week.

That promise is far from clear-cut at Leeds with Ethan Ampadu, Ilia Gruev, Archie Gray and Glen Kamara all battling for a central midfield spot.

Dubbed “fabulous” by ex-England manager Glenn Hoddle, Skipp would benefit from a season playing regularly in the Championship and for Warne, he would become his very own version of Mason Mount.
