Report: Former Chelsea player offered to Newcastle could cost just £18.6m this summer

The answer to Newcastle United’s striker conundrum might be staring them in the face.

The Magpies are looking to sign a new striker this summer, but the type of striker could be dictated by Callum Wilson‘s future.

He is a player that is being linked with a move away from St James’ Park, at a time when the club are under pressure to sell to appease profit and sustainability rules.

It has been reported that the Newcastle hierarchy are looking to sell Wilson, while it has also been claimed that he is open to a move away from Tyneside.

If he does depart, Newcastle will definitely need to sign a strong replacement. Eddie Howe will want someone who can be just as influential in front of goal, as he aims to provide Alexander Isak with more support – support he rarely got from Wilson this season due to injury.

Who could replace Callum Wilson at Newcastle United

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been linked with replacing Wilson at Newcastle, but he is a player who Everton are trying to keep at Goodison Park. They want him to sign a new contract, which could scupper a move to the North East.

But there is another striker who is available to Newcastle United, and he might not cost a ridiculous amount.

Geordie Boot Boys were recently told that Tammy Abraham is keen to move back to England this summer, and that Newcastle are one of the clubs to have been made aware about his availability.

The former Chelsea player is currently at AS Roma in Italy, but could find his way back in the Premier League ahead of next season.

And, if reports in Italy are to be believed, he could be a very viable option for the Magpies from a financial perspective.

How much Roma want for Tammy Abraham

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Roma are currently looking to receive £25million for Abraham this summer.

However, they add that the Serie A giants could settle for a fee in the region of £18.6million to £21.1million, given their need to sell.

Eddie Howe has previously remarked that it will cost a lot of money to sign a Wilson replacement, but Abraham could buck that trend based on the figures reported in Italy.

And it would be another case of Newcastle signing a player who has suffered a dip in form, getting them on a cheaper deal with the belief that they will get better.

After a bright start to life in Italy, Abraham has not had it all his own way over the past couple of years.

His first year was a dream. His second was much tougher. And his third was ruined by injury.

But Abraham is fit again, and wants to be back in the Premier League. And given the amount of money he could cost, Newcastle United should be showing an interest.

Whether or not they do remains to be seen.
