Wolves miss out on 'excellent' £33k-a-week target as he officially signs new contract until 2029

One of Wolves’ transfer targets will now not be on the move, after he signed a new contract with his club.

Wanderers fans were left delighted on Wednesday as the club officially announced the signing of Rodrigo Gomes on a five-year deal from Braga.

He comes the second addition for the club, with Tommy Doyle turning his loan move from Manchester City permanent.

Wanderers supporters are now hoping that the club will continue being productive, although Euro 2024 is about to start which could slow things down when it comes to signing players currently out in Germany with their national teams.

One player Wolves have been linked with recently is the Villarreal goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen. This, while there have been claims that Jose Sa could be set to depart Molineux this summer.

But there is now practically zero chance of a move for Jorgensen.

In recent weeks, speculation has started up again about Wolves number one Jose Sa.

Apparently, he is ready to leave the club with Jorge Mendes sounding out interest in his client.

Previously, he has had interest from Saudi Arabia, and other clubs across Europe having been keeping an eye on his situation.

There are apparently reservations for some coaches at Wolves about his ball-playing and distribution, even though he is a brilliant shot-stopper.

Jorgensen – described by his club as having ‘excellent reflexes and fantastic footwork’ – was suggested as a possible replacement for Sa, after a really good season in 2023/24 over in Spain. He actually finished the campaign with the most saves of any goalkeeper to his name with 143 (via Marca).

But the Denmark U21 – who had been on around £33,000 per week – international is practically certain to be staying put, after he officially signed a new contract with Marcelino’s side. He has penned a new deal until 2029, so Villarreal are now in a position to demand an extortionate amount to let him leave in this window.

Wolves will have to look at alternatives

So Jorgensen has agreed to fresh terms at Villarreal, meaning Wolves can forget about a deal to sign him this summer.

The club have also been linked with Mile Svilar of AS Roma, and another goalkeeper from La Liga in Alvaro Valles of Las Palmas.

Perhaps if Sa does end up going, one of those two will become more solid targets.

Sa actually had a fairly decent end to last season, and showed better form than most of his teammates during a tough period. He is a great goalkeeper and has many solid attributes.

It’s just that he can be rash at times, and also his ball-playing is probably not quite where it needs to be in the modern game. That said, he has certainly helped Wolves win a lot of points in the Premier League since he arrived three years ago.
