Sheffield Wednesday 'in contact' with free agent but Owls yet to make offer amid Euro interest - journalist

Sheffield Wednesday are ‘in contact’ with a free agent, but yet to make a contract offer to the player.

Sheffield Wednesday look set to scour the free agent market in what promises to be an active summer transfer window at Hillsborough.

For the past few years, Sheffield Wednesday have been limited to free agent and loan signings, with every summer being something of a first-team rebuild.

That looks set to be the case again this summer. But Danny Rohl will look to make some lasting changes to the side after penning a new three-year contract.

Several names are linked with moves to S6; free agent duo Ben Hamer and Max Lowe are reportedly set to arrive, whilst Sheffield Wednesday have agreed a fee for Yan Valery at Angers.

Other names have been mentioned as possible options, with Rohl keen to see January loan trio James Beadle, Ian Poveda, and Ike Ugbo return this summer; the latter two on permanent deals.

Ovie Ejaria is another name linked. The former Liverpool man was released by Reading midway through the 2023/24 season and was training with the Owls towards the end of the campaign.

Ovie Ejaria to Sheffield Wednesday latest

Journalist Alex Miller has shared a new update on Sheffield Wednesday’s interest in wide-man Ejaria.

Posting on X, Miller writes that Sheffield Wednesday ‘have remained in contact’ with Ejaria’s representatives.

But Millers adds that the Owls have yet to make a ‘firm move’, with interest coming from England and Europe; Miller says that Ejaria already has one contract offer on the table.

Ejaria is best known for his time with Reading where in four years as a loan player and then a permanent player, he featured 127 times in all competitions, scoring nine goals and assisting 13 more.

Should Sheffield Wednesday sign Ovie Ejaria this summer

With interest mounting in Ejaria, and a contract offer already on the table from one unnamed club, Sheffield Wednesday will have to make a decision soon.

He’s an experienced Championship player who showed a lot of class and trickery at Reading, boasting an eye for goal and key pass inside the penalty area, per his highlights.

And at 26 years old, he’s still at a good age to arrive at a new club and be moulded into the type of player that his next manager wants.

For Rohl, that would be a Poveda-type player who can take the ball forward out wide, cut inside, and create goal-scoring opportunities.

Ejaria is already that type of player and if Poveda arrives this summer, Rohl will want a like-for-like back up, given Poveda’s injury record.

Ejaria certainly seems to fit the bill but it looks like Sheffield Wednesday might be shopping around before making a decision, suggesting that they’re not totally sold on a deal for Ejaria.

With interest growing, it certainly looks like he’ll have a new club soon. But whether that’s Sheffield Wednesday remains to be seen.
