Liverpool must move quickly to sign ‘dangerous’ player as his £34m release clause expires

Liverpool are yet to make any serious waves in the transfer market this summer.

In fairness to the Reds, the window does not officially open until Friday. They’ve still got plenty of time to get things done.

Despite the length left in which to do deals though, that does not mean there isn’t ample opportunity out there already. Liverpool can’t be letting things slip through their fingers.

Arne Slot may have only been in the job a couple of weeks, but the new head coach can’t dawdle too long. Player’s availability may start to wane.

And in terms of current targets, there’s reportedly one player who Liverpool now have to move incredibly quickly to sign up at a bargain price.

Liverpool must move quickly for Jeremie Frimpong deal

Even before Slot arrived at Anfield, the Reds had become something of a Dutch haven.

As well as captain Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool obviously count both Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch as part of their first-team squad.

Additionally, former assistant manager Pep Lijnders is a Dutchman and added to the feeling that Liverpool were merely a red version of the Oranje.

With Slot and his coaching team set to arrive, that notion will only grow deeper. And according to the latest transfer rumours, it could continue to develop this summer.

Teun Koopmeiners has been heavily linked and would be another Netherlands international at Anfield. But German outlet Sport Bild claim that it’s actually Koopmeiners’ national team colleague Jeremie Frimpong who Liverpool really want.

The Reds are claimed to be one of a number of clubs circling Frimpong after his excellent season with Bayer Leverkusen.

Barcelona are another side who are reportedly ready to step up their interest, and have designs on paying the 23-year-old’s £34m release clause.

However, Barca, Liverpool and the host of other interested sides will have to be quick in order to do that. Frimpong’s exit clause is said to expire on Friday, June 14th.

No chance Liverpool activate Jeremie Frimpong clause

Frimpong really did have a good season with Leverkusen. The former Celtic man scored 14 times from a wing-back position. No wonder he was deemed to be ‘dangerous’ by former Riga boss Mihails Koņevs [Daily Record].

Although Frimpong is kind of a right-back though, he really operates more like an attacker in Xabi Alonso’s system.

If any club signs Frimpong as a right-back this summer, then they’re likely to be disappointed. He makes Trent Alexander-Arnold look conservative.

As a result, if Liverpool really are looking at him – and it isn’t the first time they’ve been linked with Frimpong – then it would surely be as a forward rather than a defender.

The Reds are in the market for another attacker and perhaps the Dutchman is the man they’ve identified.

In our opinion though, it would be a miracle if Liverpool moved to activate Frimpong’s release clause on Thursday or Friday. It is a good looking price, but he should not be a priority for Slot.
