Report: Chelsea expected to start two players next season, they've never played together before

Chelsea have reportedly identified two players in their squad that they want starting next to each other next season.

Enzo Maresca arrives at Stamford Bridge this summer as the club’s new head coach and he joins with a reputation of playing possession-based football.

So, which players will thrive under the new management?

Chelsea duo will start together

GiveMeSport claims that the expectation is for Chelsea defenders Wesley Fofana and Levi Colwill to be the preferred starting partnership at centre-back next season.

It is explained that central defender Tosin Adarabioyo has moved to the club this summer on the premise of game time, though.

The report adds that Maresca would have no problem fielding two right-footed or two left-footed centre-halves together.

But it sounds like a Fofana-Colwill combination will get a chance to emerge. On paper, The Chelsea Chronicle would say it looks like the strongest mix of centre-backs in the squad now that Thiago Silva has left.

Incidentally, Fofana and Colwill have never played together before, which will be down to the fact that the former missed the whole of the 2023/24 season last year through injury.

Wesley Fofana and Levi Colwill deserve first crack

It’s a fresh start for Chelsea’s squad next year under Maresca, so let’s see how his defence takes shape.

We think the unseen partnership of Fofana and Colwill has the makings of something special.

Fofana, 23, is going to need time to get back to his best after such a serious injury. However, let’s not forget he’s a super talented centre-half with pace, aggression and aerial dominance.

It would be great to partner him next to 21-year-old Colwill, who’s also quick and provides a left-footed option with such an incredible range.

Chelsea need a new defensive partnership to emerge in order to compete at the top again.
