Report: Liverpool make contact over Champions League club captain who's 'every coach's dream'

Liverpool are likely to be busy over the coming weeks as they look to bolster their ranks in order to compete on four fronts once again.

The Reds had to settle for just the Carabao Cup last season after also being firmly in the picture for the Premier League title, the FA Cup and the Europa League.

In addition, Liverpool have a new manager at the helm, and the Reds hierarchy will be eager to give Arne Slot all the tools needed to hit the ground running at Anfield.

Now, according to reports in Germany, Liverpool have made enquiries over a defender who captains his club and is “every coach’s dream”.

The player in question is Stuttgart skipper Waldemar Anton. According to BILD, Liverpool have begun to ‘collect information’ and enquire about the defender.

Joel Matip is set to depart Anfield and, while the Reds still have Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Jarell Quansah in their ranks, reinforcements wouldn’t go amiss.

BILD have also reported that, alongside Liverpool, Bundesliga duo Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund are in pursuit of Waldemar.

The 27-year-old is said to have a €22.5million release clause, which works out at around £19million.

What could Waldemar Anton bring to Liverpool?

Waldemar is a 27-year-old centre-back who can also play at right-back and in defensive midfield. He has over 250 professional appearances to his name.

The Germany international enjoyed an impressive season last time out, helping Stuttgart finish second in the table to qualify for the Champions League.

“Waldemar is everything you want from a captain: tireless, disciplined, always trains at 100 percent,” Stuttgart head coach Sebastian Hoeness said, as per the Bundesliga website.

“He is consistent, is a real stabilising factor in the defence and makes very few mistakes. He’s every coach’s dream because he’s an absolute team player.”

Waldemar’s efforts last season saw him make the cut for Germany’s Euro 2024 squad. With that in mind, Liverpool will need to move quickly before other clubs take notice.
