'There is something in there': Alan Shearer suggests £100k-a-week Chelsea player could still come good

Alan Shearer has suggested that he still got belief one Chelsea player could come good despite a “difficult” spell so far at Stamford Bridge.

Apart from if your name is Cole Palmer, Chelsea certainly isn’t the easiest of clubs to walk into right now and hit the ground running from day one.

There’s been so much drama and change during the two years of this ownership, with the latest coming in the form of another managerial swap.

Enzo Maresca is the new Blues head coach and he’s tasked with trying to get the most out of a talented but young squad at the Bridge.

Alan Shearer does see something in Chelsea player

While speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer delivered an interesting verdict on Chelsea’s Mykhailo Mudryk.

He thinks that the £100,000-a-week Blues attacker (Spotrac) does have a special quality in his game that he’s just struggling to unlock.

Shearer said: “There is something in there. I think it’s been very difficult for him at Chelsea. I look at him and think there is something there. It needs a lot of work.”

Gary Lineker replied: “Yeah, I would agree with that.”

Micah Richards then added: “Yeah, agreed. He has definitely got something. He needs a manager who believes in him and he needs a run of games even he has three or four stinkers, that he can sort of just build that confidence. Wingers are like that, aren’t they? They need that confidence to really kick on.”

Mykhailo Mudryk has not been good enough so far

The honest truth is that Mudryk has hugely underwhelmed during his first 18 months as a Chelsea player.

It’s nice to hear that some do still have confidence in the 23 year old’s ability, though.

He scored just seven goals and made four assists in 58 Chelsea appearances to date. When you consider his transfer is worth up to £89m (BBC), that return is very alarming.

Mudryk is a left winger with lightning pace and so many great physical attributes that indicate he can be a top player. There’s been glimpses of star quality from him in Chelsea colours, too.

However, he simply got to start finding consistency next season, both with his end product and decision making.
