EU ambassadors agree on framework for Ukraine and Moldova accession talks

“Ambassadors agreed in principle on the negotiating frameworks for the accession negotiations of Ukraine and Moldova,” the message said.

The first intergovernmental conference to officially start the negotiations will convene on June 25.

The negotiating frameworks are documents outlining the principles and procedures for conducting accession talks with candidate countries, reflecting the EU's position on how the terms of their membership will be determined.

On June 7, permanent representatives of EU member states failed to make a decision on starting EU accession talks for Ukraine, as recommended by the European Commission, due to objections from Hungary.

On Nov. 8, 2023, the European Commission recommended starting accession talks for Ukraine and Moldova.

European Council President Charles Michel previously stated that Ukraine could join the European Union by 2030.

On April 30, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that Ukraine could begin EU membership negotiations as early as June.
