COLUMBUS — Former Ohio State golfer Neal Shipley is appearing in his second career major championship this weekend.
He’s now 2-2 in making the cut. Yes, Shipley will play the weekend at Pinehurst No. 2 after an impressive two-day stretch of golf. The former Buckeyes star shot an opening-round 70 (E) and followed it up with a second-round 73 to make the cut by two strokes.
The US Open is Shipley’s final tournament as an amateur — only because that’s how he qualified for the golf season’s third major. By finishing runner-up at last fall’s US Amateur, Shipley earned an exemption into The Masters, where he was the low amateur — and the US Open. Following this weekend, Shipley will begin his pro career.

Shipley is the lone Ohio State golfer to make the cut. Fellow Buckeyes star Maxwell Moldovan also played in the US Open, but he missed the cut.
Moldovan previously qualified for the 2022 US Open at The Country Club, where he also missed the cut. He turned around last year and made the cut as an amateur, playing all four rounds at Los Angeles Country Club and finishing in 65th place, last among those to make the cut.
Shipley is currently tied with Gunnar Broin as the low amateur at Pinehurst No. 2 as he enters the weekend. He and Broin are two shots clear of fellow amateur Luke Clanton, a former Florida State star who also made the cut.
Shipley will tee off at 11:01 a.m. on Saturday. He’s paired with Aaron Rai.
