TV icon once apologized for 'cruel' Amy Winehouse joke - 'I'm sorry for any hurt'

American actor Neil Patrick Harris later apologized for an Amy Winehouse joke that was made at a party he hosted months after her death.

Since her tragic passing at the age of 27 on July 23rd 2011, the world has been mourning the tremendous loss of Amy Winehouse. The English singer-songwriter was a once-in-a-lifetime icon, announcing herself as a major voice in music with her debut studio album Frank in 2003. Yet against all the odds, her follow-up album Back To Black eclipsed the success of her previous record to become one of the best-selling albums in UK history. Her life recently received the biopic treatment in the 2024 movie Back To Black, and since then some have unfortunately remembered a joke at her expense that Neil Patrick Harris apologized for.

Neil Patrick Harris apologized for ‘messed up’ Amy Winehouse joke

TV and movie star Neil Patrick Harris, best known for the role of Barney Stinson on the sitcom How I Met Your Mother, once drew backlash for a Halloween party he hosted in 2011.

Taking place three months after Amy’s heartbreaking passing, images of a buffet platter arranged to resemble a corpse emerged online. The original image was posted on Twitter but later deleted, showing the platter next to a note reading ‘The Corpse of Amy Winehouse’, noting it was made up of beef ribs, pulled pork, and chicken sausage in a spicy BBQ sauce.

Despite being deleted, the picture was screenshotted and has circulated online ever since, but it wasn’t until it resurfaced in 2022 that Neil offered an apology.

“A photo recently resurfaced from a Halloween-themed party my husband and I hosted 11 years ago,” he addressed in a statement to Entertainment Weekly. “It was regrettable then, and it remains regrettable now. Amy Winehouse was a once-in-a-generation talent, and I’m sorry for any hurt this image caused.”

Reacting to the image over the years, fans of Amy blasted the joke as “cruel” and “messed up”, but it continues to make the rounds…

Fans have only one question about ‘revolting’ Amy Winehouse joke

The image has been recirculated by pages on X/Twitter as recently as this year, and fans of both Amy and Neil share the same prevailing question.

“Only one question… WHY?” one asked in reaction to the image blasted as “revolting” and “f***ed up” on the platform.

“The person that came up with this is a complete psychopath,” another scathingly accused in the replies of a thread

You’ll be hard-pressed to find the reaction of somebody who actually found the joke funny, and as Neil has said himself, “It was regrettable then, and it remains regrettable now.”
