Leeds star must be wary of repeating Jack Clarke nightmare as Tottenham eye Elland Road raid - opinion

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in raiding Leeds United and luring a key player under Daniel Farke to North London this summer, but he must be wary of Jack Clarke’s nightmare spell at Spurs.

Leeds and Spurs have a strong working relationship in the transfer market, starting with Clarke’s move to Tottenham back in the summer of 2019. Since then, Gretar Steinsson has join the Leeds transfer team.

The Icelandic chief moved to Elland Road after a spell at Tottenham under Fabio Paratici. His move helped do deals for Joe Rodon and Djed Spence last summer, with Rodon starring and Spence’s loan cancelled.

This summer, reports promise that there will be more work done between Tottenham and Leeds. Oliver Skipp has been linked with a move to Elland Road, while Spurs want a Leeds player of their own.

Leeds star must be wary of Clarke nightmare at Tottenham

Clarke, 23, has since joined Sunderland from Tottenham and spent the last three years at the Stadium of Light. He is now one of the most-dangerous wingers in the Championship, scoring 15 goals last term.

But it comes after a difficult stage in his career at Spurs. Joining the London side after 25 games under Marcelo Bielsa in 2018-19, he managed just four senior outings while on the books at Tottenham.

He spent three years at Spurs and instead, sent back to Leeds, then Stoke, QPR and finally Sunderland before a move was made permanent. His confidence was knocked, largely playing U21 football.

Tottenham want Leeds talent Archie Gray but he must be careful

Football London say Spurs want Archie Gray and are said to be watching him very carefully. Gray won The Young Player of the Year award in The Championship last season as he clocked up north of 50 games.

A serious talent, Tottenham are one of many big clubs looking at Gray. But if Gray is to leave, which feels unlikely, then he has to pick a club that can give him regular football over the coming 12 months.

Not only will Spurs be unable to do that given they have a number of midfielders at their disposal, but Clarke’s nightmare at Tottenham will be a crucial example for Gray to avoid in the coming months.

If he is to go, he needs assurances that he will be first choice. That, or stay at Leeds and avoid wasting the early years of his career as Clarke did while he was with Tottenham – a stark warning to Gray this summer.
