What Jude Bellingham said about Crystal Palace player directly after England 1-0 Serbia

Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi played a pivotal role as England beat Serbia to kickstart their Euro 2024 campaign.

The Three Lions relied on the defender to play in the absence of Harry Maguire, who injured himself just before the tournament started.

Gareth Southgate tasked Guehi with stopping the deadly strike partnership of Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dusan Vlahovic on the night.

The Palace star, partnered by John Stones, managed just that as England recorded a 1-0 win to start Euro 2024.

Jude Bellingham’s header proved the difference with the scoreline, but the player of the match winner took time to praise Guehi for his performance.

Jude Bellingham praises Marc Guehi after Serbia v England

While Bellingham took most of the plaudits for his performance against Serbia, the Real Madrid star took time to praise some of his own teammates.

That included Guehi, who started his first match for England in a major international tournament with his 12th cap for the nation.

Speaking to ITV after the match, Bellingham said on the Crystal Palace centre-back: “He was brilliant. Brilliant.

“He picked the lines amazingly. He led against two, for me, really good centre-forwards at this level in [Dusan] Vlahovic and [Aleksandar] Mitrovic, two really, really tricky customers.

“It will help a lot when he has [John] Stones beside him, one of the best around. He was fantastic.”

The stats back up the performance, with WhoScored stating that Guehi had the best passing accuracy of any starting player for England (96.2%).

The defender also made two clearances, with one tackle and one blocked shot during the match, which ended as a relatively comfortable night when it came to opposition chances.

Marc Guehi transfer future

To the Selhurst Park faithful, the impressive performance from Guehi was nothing out of the ordinary since he joined the club.

However, that has naturally led to some discussions over the defender’s future at Crystal Palace this summer.

The 23-year-old has just two years remaining on his current deal, which will no doubt see his value drop once he enters the final 12 months.

That then leaves a decision to be made over whether a new contract will be signed or if his future lies elsewhere.

Reports have stated that Manchester United have shown interest in signing Guehi in the summer transfer window, adding further speculation surrounding his long-term prospects under Oliver Glasner.

The Crystal Palace boss faces plenty of questions about his key stars during a transfer market of potential change.
