'Final steps': Former Sheffield Wednesday ace now joining European giants in £6m deal - Fabrizio Romano

A former Sheffield Wednesday player is now set for a £6 million move to the Europa League.

Sheffield Wednesday could be made to wonder ‘what if’, with their former player really impressing since leaving the club a year ago.

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru never quite lived up to expectations after joining Sheffield Wednesday in 2020.

The midfielder arrived from Man City’s academy and made his senior debut two months later.

Dele-Bashiru only managed eight appearances in his first season at the club, before forcing his way into the senior team during the 2021-22 campaign.

The Nigerian managed six goals and five assists in 86 matches for Wednesday, but failed to gain a regular run in the team before the club were promoted to the Championship.

While Dele-Bashiru was offered a new contract, he decided to reject the offer and left on a free transfer.

He went onto join Turkish club Hatayspor and very quickly found his feet, bagging nine goals and six assists in all competitions.

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru only left Sheffield Wednesday last summer

After narrowly avoiding relegation, Dele-Bashiru’s form now looks to have earned him a move to Italian giants Lazio.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano wrote on X: “Lazio are closing in on deal to sign Fisayo Dele-Bashiru for €7m fee, now time for medical and final steps. Hatayspor give the green light for Lazio target to leave.”

Should the Owls regret his free transfer away?

Dele-Bashiru left Hillsborough for free only a year ago and Hatayspor are now set to make almost £6m off his exit.

Lazio finished seventh in Serie A last term, claiming a spot in next season’s Europa League.

It is a huge move up for the 23-year-old, who was playing League One football last year.

It’s a real shame that it didn’t work out at Wednesday given that he is now beginning to show his potential.

However, Wednesday clearly wasn’t the place for him and he could have been there years and still not found the form he is currently enjoying.
