Boxer Tom Cowling has landed himself a title fight following an impressive victory this weekend.
The Newark fight ace will meet Staffordshire contender Troy Coleman (12-3) for the vacant Midlands middleweight title.
“It’ll be a big night for Tom who is really showing the potential he’s always had,” said trainer and promoter Carl Greaves, who’s already done his homework on opponent Coleman.
“He’s been in with some really good lads and won titles in the past.
“He’s boxed all over the world so it’s going to be an hard fight and a tough test, but one Tom is now ready for.
“He needs this challenge to get the best out of him. The better the opponent the better Tom performs.”
The date and venue for the bout is yet to be confirmed, but Greaves expects Cowling (12-0) to be more than ready for the bout following his stoppage victory over James Todd on the Mayhem at the Meres card in Grantham on Saturday night.
“It was a great performance against a lively opponent,” Greaves added.
“It was back and forth, both had their moments and then in the third James Todd came right back into the fight and it was toe-to-toe stuff and in the fourth Tom really turned it on and stopped him, hurt him with a heavy right hand and a fluster of shots.
“It was a good stoppage, perfect timing and a fantastic win.”
Newark promoter Greaves put on the show at the Meres Leisure Centre, the bill showcasing exciting local talent, which also included fellow Newark boxer Jade Grierson, who secured her fourth victory with a 101-second stoppage success against Marija Zivkovic.
“It was great to have Jade on as well,” Greaves added.
“We managed to get her on the show after the frustration of a fight falling through the week before. I was more than happy to have her on the show.
“She did great.”
Topping the bill was Boston’s former Commonwealth and British light heavyweight champ Callum Johnson, who secured a 40-35 points success against Viktar Chvarkou.
Johnson’s cousin Thomas Pogson secured the first stoppage of his four-bout career after dropping Joe Ducille twice.
Another young Bostonian Harvey Elding also added a tick to his win column with a 60-55 victory over Mexico’s former world title challenger Erik Omar Lopez.
Wisbech's Ryan Williams defeated Doncaster's Jake Smith 40-35, who did well after shaking off a first-round knockdown.
A third win of the year was secured by Grimsby's Shaydon Walmsley. He recorded a 39-37 win against the durable Martin Shaw.
A 60-54 from referee Ryan Churchill's scorecard gave Thetford's Roni Dean victory over Amy Greatorex.
“We pulled it out the bag and the main thing is it was a fantastic night of boxing,” added Greaves, following his first promotion in Grantham since 2015.
“We’ve had really good feedback and everyone really enjoyed the show.
“Everyone was happy, so all in all it was agreat success.
“It’s a lovely venue, fantastic set up. We’re really pleased with the venue and I definitely will be going back, just not as long of a gap this time.
