‘Let’s be fair’: David Moyes gives honest verdict on ‘unbelievable’ Manchester City player

One of Manchester City’s best players was in action at UEFA Euro 2024 on Sunday, and talkSPORT pundit David Moyes has defended his performance.

City won the Premier League title last season, and there is no surprise that they have a number of players turning out for their respective national teams at UEFA Euro 2024.

Nathan Ake is playing for the Netherlands, Rodri is a vital figure for Spain, and Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias will have to be on top form for Portugal to become the European champions.

Jeremy Doku and Kevin De Bruyne are big players for Belgium, and so is Manuel Akanji for Switzerland.

England have three City players in their squad – John Stones, Kyle Walker and Phil Foden, and Moyes has launched a strong defence of one of them after the UEFA Euro 2024 match against Serbia on Sunday.

While Walker did well at right-back for England and Stones looked sharp and composed in central defence, Foden struggled to make the same impact that he does for City.

The 24-year-old midfielder started out wide on the left and could not find the right passes and could not weave magic when he had the ball at his feet.

David Moyes’s message to Phil Foden critics after England display

When suggested that England head coach Gareth Southgate should have taken off Foden inside the first half an hour of the match, former West Ham United manager Moyes launched a strong defence of the City star.

Moyes said about Foden on talkSPORT (9:52 am, June 17, 2024): “Phil Foden has been unbelievable all season, so for him to have a dodgy 20 or 30 minutes, I would be amazed if you would take somebody off because he is not having the best 20 or 30 minutes.

“Nobody will need to tell Phil Foden. He will know himself. He has been fantastic all year for Manchester City.

“In fact, let’s be fair, he has been on the verge of being named Player of the Year in so many different things, so I would think to start talking about taking Phil Foden out of the team and doing things like that a wee bit too quick, if you are asking me.”

Gareth Southgate should persevere with Phil Foden

Foden is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League and is a regular in the City team.

England boss Southgate has to keep Foden in the starting lineup, for now at least. He has to persevere with the 24-year-old.

Foden scored 27 goals and gave 12 assists in 53 matches in all competitions for City last season.

The 24-year-old is used to playing alongside top-quality players at club level, so it is only a matter of time before he gels with the likes of Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane and Declan Rice for England.
