Leicester City hiring Corberan would be bad news for one 'unbelievable' Maresca favourite - opinion

If Leicester City are to appoint Carlos Corberan as the manager to replace Enzo Maresca then that could be bad news for a key player from last season.

With the Championship title won, Enzo Maresca left Leicester City to take the managerial role vacated by Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea despite having only been in the hot seat at the King Power for one season.

This has left Leicester in a far from ideal situation, with the club needing to appoint a new manager ahead of their return to the Premier League.

Various names have been mentioned regarding the role, with Graham Potter now looking the Leicester hierarchy’s lead candidate for the job.

However, the Foxes maintain interest in West Brom’s Carlos Corberan and if the Spaniard is appointed it could be bad news for a Maresca favourite.

Harry Winks a real favourite under Enzo Maresca

Harry Winks was signed by Maresca last summer as the player to set the tempo for his possession-focused side.

Having worked alongside Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, Maresca is very much from the same school of thought when it comes to his footballing philosophy as the former Barcelona boss.

Winks was pivotal under the Argentine as Leicester stormed to the Championship title last season, starting all but one of the club’s league games.

This is perhaps unsurprising when you consider Maresca’s comments on the 26-year-old in October, as he explained his desperation to sign the former Champions League finalist.

Maresca said: “When I met the club for the first time, he was the first name I told them. He was the main player because, with this idea, Harry is an unbelievable player.

“I saw him at Spurs, I saw him last year in Italy. With us and with this idea, he’s an unbelievable player.”

Winks may not fit into Carlos Corberan’s plans

Winks will likely have been one of the Leicester players most devastated by the news of Maresca’s departure given the career revival he enjoyed under the 44-year-old last season.

His disappointment could be compounded further if Corberan is appointed as the man to replace him, with the West Brom manager a far more pragmatic coach who focuses heavily on what his side do out of possession.

Corberan is far less concerned with having the bulk of the ball as Maresca and likes to have two physical destroyers in the centre of midfield.

Okay Yokuslu and Yann M’Vila were the Spaniard’s preferred duo at the heart of the West Brom midfield in the second half of last season, standing at 6ft 2in and 6ft respectively.

Both are tough-tackling, powerful midfielders who could hardly be more different than Winks in terms of profile.

If Corberan is to take the reins at Leicester, Winks may see his role significantly reduced in what would be an unfortunate turn of events for the diminutive midfielder.
