Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo left fuming after being subbed off for the Netherlands at Euro 2024

Liverpool manager Arne Slot will undoubtedly be keeping a close eye on his international players this summer.

There is a long list of Reds stars in actions for their respective countries, taking part in the likes of Euro 2024 and Copa America.

But Slot may just be keeping an eye on one nation in particular, with the Netherlands certain to get much of his attention.

Not only is the new Anfield man Dutch, but he currently has three players representing the country at Euro 2024.

Cody Gakpo, Ryan Gravenberch and Virgil van Dijk have all been selected for the major tournament by Ronald Koeman.

Cody Gakpo rages at Euro 2024 decision

They have already got off to a winning start, with the Netherlands defeating Poland 2-1 in their opening match.

And key to that success was Liverpool attacker Gakpo, who scored an equaliser in the 29th minute after the Poles took an early lead.

Van Djik meanwhile started and played the entire game and Gravenberch was an unused sub, while Gakpo was withdrawn in the 81st minute, much to his anger.

Reacting disappointed to being substituted, he said: “I don’t know why I had to come out, but at least there was nothing wrong with me,” according to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.

Ronald Koeman right to withdraw Liverpool star

Gakpo was perhaps right to feel aggrieved at the decision from Koeman, with the Anfield ace certainly shining on the pitch.

His efforts in the Group D clash did not go unnoticed, with Gakpo handed the official Player of the Match award.

At the same time, however, Koeman deserves plenty of praise for his management of the game and his key decisions in the dugout.

Jeremie Frimpong replaced Gakpo nine minutes from time, with Wout Weghorst coming on for Memphis Depay.

And it was former Manchester United striker Weghorst who was the hero of the day, netting the winner just two minutes later.

Cody Gakpo can have another superb major tournament

Gakpo would have been annoyed in the heat of the moment, but it is clear that he is going to be a crucial player for the Netherlands over the coming weeks.

Resting him as much as possible will, therefore, be a priority, with very tricky matches against France and Austria rapidly approaching.

Gakpo netted three goals at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and could be set to match or surpass that tally in Germany after one goal from one game so far.

With the forward having endured a somewhat stop-start spell at Liverpool, Jamie Redknapp believes a run in the team is all Gakpo needs to really kickstart his Anfield career.

His former manager Jurgen Klopp alluded to managing the Netherlands ace incorrectly at one stage last season, but a successful Euro 2024 could give the attacker all he needs to immediately hit the ground running under Slot.
