Aston Villa prepare to make contact with transfer target Luiz Junior

This week, Portuguese outlet O Jogo reported that Villa are ready to ‘present a proposal’ to Famalicao for goalkeeper Luiz Junior.

It’s claimed that the Premier League club are willing to offer a price of around €12m (£10m) for the 23-year-old, adding that Villa are prepared to spend to acquire him.

The Brazilian played a fundamental role in Liga Portugal last term, making 33 appearances for Famalicao, earning seven team-of-the-week ratings, as per Sofascore.

With Monchi hoping to pounce on the highly-rated goalkeeper in the coming weeks, Emery could soon be presented with a player capable of filling a significant void in the future.

Luiz Junior could be Unai Emery’s eventual heir to Emi Martinez

While Luiz Junior would arrive at Villa as the firm number two to Emi Martinez, the 23-year-old could be the perfect candidate to one day replace the formidable Argentine.

Martinez is integral to how the Villans play under Emery, with his presence and personality between the posts playing a huge part in Villa’s Champions League-securing season last term.

Luiz Junior had a campaign just as impactful for Famalicao, as he stood out as one of the best ‘keepers in Portugal.

The table above gives an insight into the level Luiz Junior was performing at for Famalicao over the 2023/24 campaign, being ever-reliable for his side at such a young age.

For his displays, analyst Ben Mattinson described the Villa target as being a goalkeeper capable of playing at one of the ‘biggest clubs’ in Europe.

Mattinson went on to laud the Brazilian as a ‘commanding’ figure who is ‘physically dominant’ in the box.

While the idea of Villa being without Martinez is unimaginable for many, capturing a talent as impressive as Luiz Junior would see the leap between Villa’s first and second-choice shot-stopper narrowed.

Signing the Famalicao ace could be a move that is fundamental for the future, and one that highlights the progression Emery hopes to make.
