Alan Shearer says ‘gifted’ Trent Alexander-Arnold can be key to unlocking Harry Kane for England

Liverpool have a very long list of talented players among their ranks, with club chiefs working hard to create that situation.

A lot of time and money has been spent on building a successful squad, with Jurgen Klopp guiding them to plenty of glory over the years.

The German has, however, decided to move on, with former Feyenoord manager Arne Slot now in the Anfield dugout.

He comes to Merseyside in a fortunate position, with not every new manager walking into such an established setup.

Keeping the star players beyond the summer will, however, not be an easy task, with the transfer window now underway.

Alan Shearer shares Trent Alexander-Arnold verdict for England

One of the leading figures at Anfield now is star defender Trent Alexander-Arnold, who simply has to be kept at Liverpool at all costs.

But he is going through a transition in his career, with the full-back being used as a midfielder for his country.

England manager Gareth Southgate was experimenting with Alexander-Arnold in that role in the build-up to Euro 2024, before starting him there in the opening win against Serbia.

Former Three Lions striker Alan Shearer has projected big things for the Liverpool man in his new position, believing he can help unlock the full potential of Harry Kane.

“For a long time, Kane’s role for England was similar to the way he often played for Tottenham Hotspur,” Shearer told BBC Sport.

“Go back to the 2018 World Cup and he was coming back to the halfway line to collect the ball and linking play with wide forwards who would hug the touchline and fly forward.

“That worked, but this is a different England team, and we do not need Kane to be the playmaker now we have got such gifted midfielders behind him.

“Players like Jude Bellingham and Trent Alexander-Arnold can do that too so, instead, part of Kane’s role is to bring them into the game as much as possible.”

Will Gareth Southgate stick with the Liverpool man in midfield?

Kane had a very quiet evening as England beat Serbia 1-0 in Group C, with Bellingham netting the only goal of the game.

That arrived via a 13th-minute header, with nothing much of note taking place after that in the clash in Germany.

It will leave Southgate asking many questions of his players, and indeed pondering exactly what approach to take against Denmark.

It remains to be seen what is in store for Alexander-Arnold, but Kane is certainly a big fan of the Liverpool man, whether it be in right-back or in midfield.

Former Premier League star Cesc Fabregas meanwhile admired the bravery from Southgate to go with Alexander-Arnold in midfield, and is expecting another start for the Liverpool star next time out.

Slovenia represent England’s final group match at Euro 2024, with the former having drawn 1-1 with Denmark in their opening game.
