Report: What Newcastle United are considering doing after they sign James Trafford

Newcastle United are doing their best to sign James Trafford from Burnley.

The Magpies are aiming to bring in a goalkeeper this summer, and a change of approach has resulted in them targeting James Trafford.

It initially looked like Newcastle United would bring in a higher calibre player to jostle with Nick Pope, with the idea being that Eddie Howe could rotate two top level goalkeepers if the Magpies were in Europe.

That is why they wanted to sign Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia, but that deal appears to be off for now. He has been deemed too expensive by Newcastle, while he was not convinced about moving to St James’ Park when it emerged that he would not be a guaranteed starter.

Newcastle eyeing James Trafford deal

Now Newcastle are targeting Trafford, who would act as deputy to Nick Pope. It would appear he is happy with that, with the 21-year-old interested in making the move to Tyneside.

Personal terms have reportedly been agreed, but Burnley are yet to accept an offer. The Clarets are looking to receive £20million for Trafford, which is slightly more than what Newcastle value him at. They believe he is worth closer to £18million, which means a compromise needs to be reached.

While that is yet to happen, a deal feels likely.

Toon could also sign another goalkeeper this summer

But Trafford might not be the only goalkeeper who Newcastle United sign this summer.

That is according to the Athletic, who report that the Magpies are also considering bringing in someone more senior to be their third choice goalkeeper.

However, they add that reports about Asmir Begovic being close to arriving are wide of the mark.

Signing another goalkeeper would make sense for Newcastle

But he is the right profile for what Newcastle need. They are effectively looking to replace Loris Karius, who is leaving when his contract expires at the end of this month.

The club wants someone experienced like Begovic who can provide more support in the goalkeeping department, which is an area where Newcastle struggled last season when Nick Pope went down with an injury.

He was replaced by Martin Dubravka, who looks likely to leave St James’ Park this summer amid interest from Celtic.

Signing another goalkeeper after Trafford would mean that Mark Gillespie continues to be Newcastle’s fourth choice stopper, which only highlights how important he is behind the scenes. That is why the Magpies have given him a new contract, despite seemingly having reservations over promoting him to third choice.
